2010 Annual Fundraising Events

The DSOSN is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization fully funded by donations, private grants and fundraisers.  The organization does not receive any federal or state funding.  The organization holds the following major fundraising events annually to generate funds to fulfill its mission and provide programs and services.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
The 2010 Circle of Friends Annual Giving Campaign will be held on Saturday – March 13th at the home of Susan Wasserkrug, Board Director. This is our yearly annual giving campaign geared toward developing and maintaining friendships and partnerships with individuals and businesses that want to support DSOSN beyond our annual membership drive. If you would like to contribute to the Circle of Friends Annual Giving Campaign and attend the reception, please call Deann Cline at the DSOSN office to RSVP.
A DAY OF GOLFING AND GIVING

Plans are underway for the 13th annual Down Syndrome Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place at the Snow Mountain Course at the fabulous Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort on Friday – June 4th with a 1:30 pm shotgun. The tournament will be a shamble format.A shamble format is a combination of a scramble and a best ball.  Each player in the foursome tees off, the best position is determined and then each player plays his or her own ball to the competition of the hole.  The lowest score on each hole is recorded as a team score.

The awards dinner will immediately follow the tournament and will include a raffle and auction. There will also be a wine tasting at the awards dinner sponsored by Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. Spouses and others can attend the awards dinner portion only for $50.

To date, the 2010 Golf Committee includes Tom Pohlman, Vice President & GM of the Golden Nugget – Laughlin, Sue Covey, Alejanadra Guacaheme, and Bill Smith.

DIMES FOR DOWNS
The Dimes for Downs Campaign is a year long fundraising effort that gives school age children as well as local businesses the opportunity to help raise funds for the programs and services offered at DSOSN to help those affected by Down syndrome. It’s a very easy campaign to implement with no upfront costs to schools or businesses. In regards to school age children, schools are recruited to sign up for the campaign over a two week period of time. Children then bring in their spare change (pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters). The class that raised the most money at each school receives a special treat: a McDonald’s breakfast or lunch, a pizza party or Dimes for Downs t-shirts for each student.

It’s also a great way for businesses to get involved in helping DSOSN. All they have to do is place coin collection containers in their establishment for a designated period of time and ask their patrons to donate their spare change. DSOSN provides all the materials needed for schools and business to conduct a successful campaign: coin collection containers, posters, Dear Parent Letters, Campaign Coordinator Kit, etc. Parents, ask you child’s school if they would be interested in receiving information on the campaign to consider participating. Also, if you are a business that might be interested, please contact Deann at the office.

BUDDY WALK
Details for the 10th annual Buddy Walk are still in the works – with a date and location to be announced shortly. We are proud that the Buddy Walk has reached this anniversary milestone in DSOSN history. That being said, we feel it is time to take this event to the next level in 2011. Ideas that we are considering are to move the event in the spring and add a running and/or even cycling component to it. This is all still in the planning stages. For this year the Buddy Walk will remain the same as we move forward to put the 2011 plans in place. A date and location for the 2010 Buddy Walk will be announced shortly.

We are looking for individuals who would want to serve on this committee to transition the event to the next level. We also would be renaming the event and are asking members to think of new names. We will be having a contest on this and details will be made available after more particulars are determined.

Also, please call Deann at the office if you have not received your 2009 Buddy Walk incentives.

FESTIVAL OF TREES & LIGHTS
We first of all want to thank everyone who helped to make the 21stannual Festival of Trees & Lights the grand success that it was. The committee was fabulous: thank you John, Shelley, Sue, Cathy, Jennifer, Sandy, Fran and all the others. Also thank you to all the attendees and sponsors who helped us to raise over $180,000 from the event.
A date and venue for the 22nd Festival will be announced shortly.
OTHER INFORMATION REGARDING FUNDRAISING
3rd Party & Other Fundraisers
If anyone has a fundraising idea to help DSOSN raise funds or if anyone wants to conduct their own 3rd party fundraising event, please call the DSOSN office and ask for Deann. We welcome all and any ideas that will help us generate additional revenue for our programs and services to assist those affected by Down syndrome.
Sponsors Needed
We are asking all members (new and longtime) to help us in identifying sponsors for events. If anyone has a business and would like to learn about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Deann. Also, if you work for an employer that you feel we can approach, please contact us as well. Or maybe even discuss DSOSN with your employer first to see if there might be an interest. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the golf tournament, Buddy Walk and Festival of Trees & Lights.
