General Volunteer Opportunities
Thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunites through the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada. Below is a list of ways that you can help us help our members.
Clerical: The office is generally opened Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Help is needed with filing, answering phones, data input, etc. Volunteers needed on regular, set schedules (5-10 hours per month). Volunteers needed for on call basis for mailings and during special events (variable number of hours per month). There is an especially big need for data entry and mailings at the present time. Data entry requires individuals who are familiar with data input into excel – mainly names, addresses, phone numbers and emails. Very little if any mathematical formula skills are required.
Events: The DSOSN currently holds five major fundraising events a year; an annual golf tournament; the Buddy Walk®; the Festival of Trees and Lights™, the Dimes for Downs school & youth campaign and the Circle of Friends Annual Pledge drive. Volunteers are needed prior to the events to serve on committees (planning), during the events (set-up, registration, supervision, etc.), and post event (clean-up, wrap-up, follow-up). Depending on the event, we are always in need of strong healthy individuals who can lift to help us load and unload – and trucks are needed as well. In addition to the major events, we also have large gift sales twice a year, community awareness events, and publicity campaigns.
General: These volunteers will do just about anything! Flexibility is a key factor.
Individuals with Down syndrome: Volunteers are needed to provide supervision to the individuals and their siblings during monthly meetings. Several social events are held each year for the families, and volunteers are needed to plan and execute the events, i.e. a spring party, Halloween party and a holiday gathering, to name a few. And we are always open to suggestions for other events and activities that might interest our members. Volunteers needed to “buddy” with the young adults who have Down syndrome, to plan activities using the “Party Room”, to plan & assist at sporting activities.
Management: Volunteers are needed to chair committee activities; to develop ways and means to express our mission and vision statements, to intern in the non-profit sector.
Maintenance: Volunteers are needed to help with the overall appearance of the DSOSN—inside and out. There are numerous projects for a volunteer with carpentry skills. We have work to be done with the landscaping, painting (signage, windows, and interior/exterior), and general “housekeeping”.
If you have a special talent and/or the interest, we have a place for you.
