DIMES FOR DOWN SYNDROME

CAMPAIGN - ongoing

Dimes for Down Syndrome is a community service project for school age children: elementary through high school.  Its purpose is to promote a positive understanding of Down syndrome within our community and to raise funds for the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada (DSOSN).  It is a coin drive in which children are asked to bring in their spare change to raise money for programs and services.

100% of the funds you raise stay in the local community to help thousands of children and individuals affected by Down syndrome. These funds will help provide the following programs and services:  music therapy, dance therapy, yoga therapy, speech therapy, support groups, life skill seminars, lending library and resource center and many others.

Since the campaign began in 2006 over $45,000 has been raised through the program. Thank you to all the schools who have participated in this community service project helping those affected by Down syndrome in the community.  We hope you join us once again this year and encourage other schools to join in as well.

Recent participating schools from 2008 and 2009 include:  Schofield Middle School, St. Viator School, Treem Elementary, Coronado High School, Sierra Vista High School, Silverado High School, Kesterson Elementary, Dooley Elementary, Bilbray Elementary, Cortney Junior High School,  Lawrence Junior High School, Elsie Wolff Elementary School, Burkholder Elementary School,  H.P. Fitzgerald Elementary School, Mable Hoaggard Magnet School and Tony Alamo Elementary.

Schools can conduct their campaign in either the spring, summer or fall during the school year.  We recommend the school selecting a designated two-week period that is convenient with their school schedule. The top fundraising class in each school will receive a party celebration sponsored by McDonalds: either a breakfast or luncheon.  Or the top fundraising class can elect to have a pizza party or have each child in the class receive a Dimes for Downs T-shirt. The schools that have already participated and received the McDonalds parties have just raved about how much the students enjoyed and appreciated them.

This is a great opportunity for school children to learn the importance of giving and helping others.  It teaches them valuable lessons in how their efforts can make a big difference by simply collecting spare change.  We hope your school will consider Dimes for Down Syndrome as your school's community service project this year.
