Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) Symposium at CHOP

Posted By: Bwallace 04-23-2008 05:04 am

Hi,
My wife and recently attended the Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) symposium that was hosted by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. We learned a great deal, and we went because we wanted to learn more about our son Jackson (who is now three), and because we wanted to give back to Las Vegas.

I went to Philadelphia with the idea in mind that there would be other parents in Las Vegas who would want to know the same things we might learn. Although surprised to find that we were the only ones in attendance from the West Coast (out of 400 attendees), I did my best to meet parents and presenters.

So, I am finishing a presentation that I will soon present to families about some of the best things we learned during the one day symposium. I expect to present it for families several times (we know how hard it is to get to a meeting). The dates will probably be in May and June 2008. You can contact me if you are interested in attending at info4bodi@yahoo.com and of course let Bonnie Hall know also.

One thing that stood out is how organized and committed the families are. We met a few of the core parents (moms) who started the Trisomy 21 Program at CHOP. Overall, it provided a good example for us in the west to see what is possible for our children in this city.

Respectfully submitted by

Thank you for your input. We look forward to hearing about the conference. When our daughter was 1 (almost 3 years ago) we went to the Down syndrome congress conference in Aneheim, CA. We learned a lot (and of course we saw Mickey Mouse). But most of all we felt an acceptance that we have kept with us. I look forward to hearing ideas from a medical symposium. I have been looking into the Down Syndrome Clinic in San Diego. It is a new center that offers OT, PT, and Speech (maybe more). I am interrested in getting her evaluations done by therapists with experience in working with Down sydrome so I can apply it to her on going therapies in Las Vegas (we are having some sensory problems). Thanks again.
Jason and Stephanie
